Roofing tools play a pivotal role in modifying or constructing roof architecture. Besides the basic roofing tools and equipments, there are certain equipments or devices that are employed by the roofers for the sake of safety. Some of these equipments are tree-climbing gears, scaffolding, ropes, roofing brackets, goggles, rubber gloves etc. Roofing bracket or jack is one such equipment that reduces the complexity of a roofing project to a large extent.
It is very important to install the roof brackets in a proper way. Improper installation may lead to an accident during the course of action. Faulty installation of the roof brackets would exert excess pressure on the jacks of the setup and consequently, the brackets would collapse leading to the fall down of the workers or the supplies stationed on the brackets.
Consult an expert regarding the usage of the brackets or jacks on your roof. The use of roof brackets is generally avoided in case of multi-floor buildings or high-pitched roofs. Both the factors are considerably risky to work with and hence, homeowners should avoid the usage of brackets on inappropriate roof structures.
The roof brackets or jacks are installed along the edges of the roof. Hence, you would need a ladder to access the edges of the roof. Climb up to the edges of the roof and start installing the roof brackets. Follow the manufacturer’s specifications while installing the brackets in place. The nails should be driven directly into the roof rafters to enhance the strength of the roof brackets. Lateral installation of nails can lead to a collapse of the roof jacks at any time.
Once the base of the jack is nailed to the rafter along the roof edges, move to the shingled area of the roof. Pry up the shingles with the help of a roofing pry bar and slip in the business-end of the jack under the shingle. Similarly, install another roof jack such that there are two roof brackets installed on the roof. Make sure that the bottom edge of the rafter is clearly visible along the edge of the roof.
Use three 16-penny nails to secure the top slots of the brackets in place. The nails should go through the rafters as well.
If the nails don’t make any contact with the rafters then the installation requires a review before moving ahead with the proceedings.
Call a roofer to reexamine the success of the bracket installation.
