Fix A Leaking Tap Without Calling A Plumber

Leaking of faucet is a common problem in every house that could be caused anytime. The cause of this leaking could be simple or complex. So if you encounter such problem then first try to solve it yourself and if you are not able to solve it then call a plumber for solving it. This article will help you in knowing the basics of repairing a leaky faucet.

Before starting the repair process, turn off the water supply to that faucet. Don’t apply much force while turning off the valve as the valve might break in doing so. Also put an object on the sink hole to protect screws, washers and other small materials from falling down.

Use a screwdriver to take off the tap cover. When the cover will be removed, you will find a retaining screw. Keep this screw at a safe place and take away the head of the tap.

After this you need to take out the larger headgear nut using a spanner. You need to be little attentive while doing this because if not done properly, it may harm the pipe that is fixed to it. In case, this pipe gets damaged then only an expert plumber can solve this problem.

If the headgear nut is still difficult to turn, you could apply some oil around the joint and wait for about 5-10 minutes for it to soak in the oil before trying to remove it again. You could also try to apply some heat to it by using an electric paint stripper or a blow torch but always remember to be careful when using such equipments.

Remove the washer using a screwdriver. If you find difficulty in removing the washer, you could try to use oil again to lubricate it. Fit and replace the new washer. After fitting the new washer, grease the base of the tap.

Now put everything back into place using a screwdriver and a spanner to reassemble the tap. Turn on the water supply and check if the problem is solved.

If the problem still persists then leave the tap as it is and call an expert plumber to solve the problem because now the problem is not under your control.
